As a direct result of that piece, I became one of the founding directors of a charity called the Children's High Level Group, which campaigns for the protection and promotion of children's rights. The campaign is run by The Children’s High Level Group (CHLG), and aims to stamp out cruelty, neglect and abuse of young people. Many of these children are forced to live in cramped, unhygienic and basic accommodation. Violence and bullying is a common occurrence and there are many cases of children being chained and caged. These are the sort of practices that we want to bring to an end, so that no child in the 21st century ever has to endure such appalling conditions again. The CHLG also highlights the positive changes in child welfare that are beginning to take root in these countries, and are helping transform the lives of hundreds of thousands of children. CHLG's hope is that this will create a momentum for change across the whole of Europe. The Children’s High Level Group (CHLG) is a charity whose mission is to improve the well-being, health and protection of vulnerable children and was founded by, amongst others, MEP Emma Nicholson and myself in 2005, when we were very deeply moved by the poverty, sickness and maltreatment of children and decided to act.]]></c></r></rs></x><?php } ?><?php if($ref == "mm" ){?><x><rs n="links" c="t,c"><r><c n="t"><![CDATA[Missing Madeleine]]></c><c n="c"><![CDATA[Jerry and Kate McCann released this last photograph of their daughter before her abduction in the Algarve eight weeks ago. The picture is of Madeleine sitting by the swimming pool on the day she was snatched from her bed. Kate took the photo of Madeleine at 2.29pm on May 3 - Mrs McCann's camera clock is one hour out so the display reads 1.29pm. Less than eight hours later, before 10pm that night, Madeleine disappeared. Mr and Mrs McCann, backed by an army of friends and family, remain convinced that four year old Madeleine is alive and are praying, along with people around the world, for her safe return. She chose the Society because her late mother was diagnosed with MS when JK Rowling was just 15. Multiple Sclerosis (MS) affects young adults (3 women for every 1 man diagnosed) and more people have MS in Scotland than anywhere else in the world - around 1 in 500 people, so you are likely to know someone who is affected. MS is the result of damage to the 'myelin', the protective coating on our nerves (this damage leaves a scar - the word 'multiple' means 'lots' and 'sclerosis' means 'scars'). If you imagine that when you want to do anything - eg, move your hand to pick up a pencil - your brain has to send a message down through your central nervous system to your hand to tell it to do this. If it is damaged then the message that your brain sends can't travel smoothly - it's like an interrupted bumpy path. So, something simple like picking up a pencil can become a hugely difficult and frustrating action because your brain can't get the message to your hand properly. With MS, everyday activities become far more difficult and those with MS really need the support of their families and friends (for example if your friend's mum or dad has MS, they may not have much time to play as they will be helping with housework or shopping). The MS Society exists to help everyone in Scotland affected by MS and their families to live as full a life as possible. Although its cause is not yet known, JK Rowling is helping to fund our world leading research projects right here in Scotland and we are confident they will one day lead us to a cure. Quidditch has even been described as ‘soccer-like’ on several occasions, which is nonsensical to anybody familiar with the rules of both games. (I am sure this misunderstanding sprang originally from the fact that Ron says to Harry in ‘Philosopher’s Stone’ ‘it’s like football in the Muggle world’, but Ron is referring only to the sport’s immense popularity, not to the game itself.) I did not base Quidditch on any game that exists, or existed, in reality. Finding the ‘real’ counterpart of things that appear in the Harry Potter books has become a popular newspaper space-filler. My carbon-based friends, however, if asked whether I jog, do pilates and yoga, have a frozen forehead or refuse cake, might well suffer some kind of mirth-induced internal injury. It would be churlish not to thank the journalist concerned for saying that I look better now than I did in the early days of Harry Potter's success, and I am indeed grateful for the underlying compliment. In the interests of accuracy, however, I must point out that, far from losing weight, I've gained a good bit since the 'before' photographs featured in the article. Here are the facts. The defendants were not religious charities, and theirs was not a religious celebration. On the contrary, it was a large-scale, commercial, sponsored event involving corporations that included a major Indian high street bank. The event was, however, set up while a Hindu festival was going on. It was Warner Bros who brought the case, because the rights that were being infringed belong to them, not me. My name has to be attached to such proceedings as a legal technicality, because I am the underlying creator of Harry Potter series. Also due to a technicality, Warner Bros were obliged to claim damages as part of their claim. However, they waived this right, and neither sought nor obtained any financial compensation. It is completely false to assert that they, or I, were trying to take money from anybody, let alone two million rupees. The court ruled that Warner Bros. rights had indeed been infringed, and that events such as the one in question would need Warner Bros.' permission in the future. The court also restrained all the defendants from any future events infringing Warner Bros. rights. Some of the news agencies and newspapers who misreported this story subsequently issued corrections and apologies, but the original, false story is still doing the rounds. I have always been honest about the fact that Gilderoy Lockhart WAS inspired by a real man (see the 'Extras' section). For obvious reasons I am not going to identify the person in question - however irritating he was, he does not deserve that - but I can state categorically that I never married him. I do not lie about the inspiration for characters (although at times like these, I wonder why I don’t refuse to answer these questions at all!)]]></c><c n="s"><![CDATA[puregarbage,toxic]]></c></r>

But wait - now I stop and think about it, I'M the real Harry Potter! I wear glasses, I've got a scar, my school had houses, I sometimes got into trouble… so stand by to read a story in some tabloid tomorrow headlined: 'Rowling Demands Half-Share of Own Royalties'. Unfortunately and depressingly, these sorts of stories crop up all the time (see my 'Biography'). There is nothing any author can do to stop people claiming that they 'inspired' characters. It’s quite true that we have been doing building work on our house in Edinburgh, but as we are not setting up a hotel we went for a slightly more moderate number of sleeping quarters - divide fifteen by three and you might find yourself a little closer to the truth.
